This weekend, while accompanying SP Jenn from SportsPlug for live coverage of the Southampton Indians in Courtland, I discovered a few things about this team and their community. The most notable detail was their home base—Courtland, VA—often referred to by locals as “the sticks.”
To get straight to the point, the Indians came out strong, pulling off a clean sweep in the first half. The energy on the sideline and in the stands was unmatched, as seen in the footage above. Southampton only needed a few more points to lock in the win, finishing the night with a 40–8 victory.
Being on-site throughout the weekend allowed me to capture crisp footage and conduct halftime and locker room interviews, offering a closer look into the team’s mindset and energy as they carried their lead into the second half.
One of the common themes that stood out in those conversations was brotherhood. The players who made key plays and brought contagious energy to the field spoke about reconnecting bonds that go beyond the game. That sense of unity—both on the sidelines and under the lights—was impossible to miss.
Between celebrating graduating seniors and honoring a few jersey retirements, one tribute in particular stood out: the retirement of Greg Scott’s jersey, a former Southampton standout who went on to play for the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals after being selected in the 7th round of the 2002 NFL Draft as a defensive end.
Now, let’s take a look at the lead scorers and graduating seniors who helped make this night one to remember.

It was a pleasure to meet and be in the presence of Dr. Xavier Scott, whose leadership and care for his players—and for those who support them—reflect the kind of integrity that defines Southampton football.
