Beyond the Box Score: Potomac’s Effort, Leadership, and Playmakers

Let’s start with my original home team—Potomac Senior High School in Dumfries, Virginia. Currently sitting at 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Cardinal District, they’re in 5th place. With adjustments made to player positions and roles midway through this season, it has been a ride, to say the least. As I said to one of the players before, they will win a few games—whether they have a winning season this season or next. They’ve still made quite the effort and continue to do so as the season continues.

Their next home game is against Freedom High. Looking at game stats, Potomac is on a slightly better run, with 2 wins in their pocket already.

Now, let’s take a look at Prince William County teams: Colgan is at 3-3 overall (1-1 region), with Woodbridge always performing well at 5-1 overall (2-0 region).

The standouts, from freshman to senior, have been noticeable statistically, BUT there have been a few who’ve caught my eye in sportsmanship, leadership, and just overall being a team player.

D’mari Lanier (#7 – Captain) is always hyping up his team, frequently boosting morale and working in with teammates on the sideline.

Elijah Martin (#15) is not just someone who can make an incredible run on a kick return, but someone who’ll support others and continue to be resilient in the face of adversity.

Makai Smith (#88)—he’s a real go-getter on defense and is a continuously improving player on and off the field.

Christian Johnson Jr. (#11) is a multi-sport athlete and a real playmaker on the field or the basketball court. He takes charge of his position and his role as a teammate.

Last but not least, Jayden Asiedu (#14)—a talented photographer and videographer who also brought me back to the sidelines of my high school. He has a great leg and has been as important on offense as he is on special teams. He’s always looking out for other players and opportunities to get others coverage.
